Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My husband has been seeing a doctor for back pain, he gave him a prescription for pain meds, he went to have surgery and the doctor asked for the pain meds back, we gave them to him and he wrote him 2 more prescriptions of same meds. Is that a common practice?
Hi i am Dr Ahmed Aly thanks for using HealthcareMagic site , I had gone through your question and understand your concerns ..
Actually that is common especially after surgery , during such surgeries a lot of manipulations are done and that causes inflammation and pain so this is why the prescriptions may be repeated .and after healing and pain subsides these medications maybe stopped or doses are minimized or even used when needed only according to the severity of his condition . Physiotherapy with a chiropractor , avoiding heavy weight , hot massages with topical gels and spinal straightening exercises are very effective for most of the cases and give better results than the medications in some cases so i recommend him to maintain these instructions to decrease his pain .
